Requirements Development and Translation
TRANSLATING "BLUE-SKY" CONCEPTS INTO BUILDABLE SYSTEMS
In order to begin the process of translating "blue-sky" systems concepts into buildable systems, requirements development is crucial. Once a systems concept has been defined, performance requirements must be developed and formalized, beginning at a concept level and flowing down into systems and subsystems. These performance requirements are then translated into detailed specifications. An initial investment in requirements development and translation minimizes cost and enhances system reliability, development time, and overall performance.
DEFINING USER NEEDS
The requirements development process begins with a set of highly structured, highly collaborative interactions with a system's intended users. These interactions are designed to uncover user needs that the system must address. Needs definition is necessarily an iterative process, and its success depends on the knowledge and experience of the engineers involved. Avtec's engineering services organization has both the engineering and the defense operations expertise necessary to ensure a successful outcome.
FROM USER NEEDS TO SYSTEM SPECS
Once user needs have been defined, they must be translated into requirements statements, which are vetted with system stakeholders. In another iterative process, these requirements are then translated into detailed engineering specifications. A high-level "A" specification is completed first, and after approval is extrapolated into the detailed system and subsystem specifications necessary to build the system.
